Construction & Development: Case Study
Kiewit Power Engineers
Situational Analysis
In December of 2007 two companies – a construction company and an engineering firm – joined together to form Kiewit Power Engineers. Today Kiewit is one of the largest construction and engineering firms in the country and specializes in building power plants throughout North America.
Objective
The merger involved the construction of a new corporate headquarters and the relocation of 700 hundred employees. The estimated time frame for construction and relocation was 18 months.
Block Construction Services (BCS) was asked to find Kiewit a great location in a high-image area with immediate access to highways, restaurants and retail. The ideal site was identified in the new Renner Corporate Centre, located in the K-10/Interstate 435 western corridor of Johnson County, Kansas.
Results
The amount of work that went into the project was amazing. A few obstacles were encountered – such as building a roundabout and moving the electrical and sewers – but BCS made it work! The amount of concrete and material that was moved in the short amount of time was incredible.
In July 2009, all 700 employees in the combined company moved into our new 150,000 SF building. BCS had us up and running within 12 months of the construction start date. Despite numerous hurdles during the constructoin process, BCS delivered our building on time and on budget.
